For Axel Smith, chairman of Naturarvet, nature has always been a place of peace, diversity and joy.
- Nature is something that humans do not need to control. It is life and diversity. I like having nature around me," says Axel.
Axel also talks about a place in nature from his childhood, at his grandmother and grandfather's summer cottage in Österlen, which has left its mark on his relationship with nature.
- "There was a forest, a stream and an old barn. My brother and I played, went exploring and went to the sea. It's a place I've continued to return to, even after they passed away.
When Axel wanted to get involved in climate action, he felt very inadequate.
- I was looking for something that really makes a difference. Climate policies are good and associations that receive grants can do a lot of good for a particular project. But often it costs a lot of time and money, without much happening. But with Naturarvet there is a concrete effect. We are building something that will last. That's why I wanted to be involved.
On the Board, Axel appreciates both the community and the results:
- Everyone has the same commitment and it is easy to cooperate. When Naturarvet manages to buy a forest, or when we on the board were able to hire Pamela and Lotta - that's what makes me happy. Then something concrete really happens.
For Axel, it is important that Naturarvet also clearly highlights the climate benefits.
- "We need to talk more about the carbon dioxide that stays in the forest thanks to our efforts. Showing the climate benefits and biodiversity makes the work even more valuable.
And when asked what he thinks will have happened to all of Sweden's old-growth forests in 50 years, he replies
- "I hope, of course, that all the old-growth forests that exist have not been destroyed for short-term gains, and that Naturarvet has been able to protect many thousands of hectares. So that future generations can experience living forests.
For those thinking of supporting Naturarvet , the message is clear:
- The beauty of Naturarvet is that protection is forever. Its purpose and objectives are credible and you know exactly where your money is going. And it is not affected by politics, subsidies or temporary decisions. Once the forest is bought, it is protected - forever.
Being part of Naturarvet also gives a lot back.
- It is a positive commitment that does not feel burdensome. We have fun together, and it feels meaningful to do something lasting for both nature and the future. If you want to join the board, please get in touch with us," Axel concludes.
