Naturarvet is a charitable foundation whose purpose is to acquire forest land with old-growth forest. The aim is to preserve biodiversity by protecting endangered animal and plant species, and to otherwise promote research, outdoor life and tourism for present and future generations.
In order to guarantee a permanent protection of old-growth forest purchased by the Foundation, Naturarvet has established statutes that cannot be changed and are binding under the current Foundation Act (1994:1220).
All forests acquired by the Foundation have the protection provisions of total harvesting protection with prohibited agriculture and forestry. The Foundation may not sell acquired old-growth forest. This provides permanent protection on a par with a national park. When the County Administrative Board or other authority responsible for the establishment of a nature reserve agrees, Naturarvet shall allocate forest and land for nature reserve establishment.
In the event of dissolution of the foundation, the County Administrative Board of Norrbotten County is responsible for ensuring that the forest areas of the Naturarvet are preserved in accordance with the Naturarvet Statutes.
