Biodiversity Day...

... ... falls on May 22, but already now on Thursday 18/5 to Sunday 21/5, vase roofs will be laid on two timber barns in Svartsundets old-growth forest on Gräsö. The vase roof is done in collaboration with the County Administrative Board, which finances this through two projects - protection of timber barns as a substrate for endangered barn lichens and to benefit wild pollinators such as wild bees, which like to build nests in the eaves of the vase roof.

If you want to visit the area to enjoy the fantastic spring on Gräsö and watch for a while while an experienced team lays the vase stakes, a visit to Gräsö is recommended. A day visit is possible for those who live within 300 km and have their own car. Otherwise we recommend staying overnight with your own tent/hammock or in some accommodation at Gräsö camping or rooms in Öregrund.

You can find directions to Svartsundets and Fågelskärsuddens old-growth forest on this page and we recommend that you park your car on a level ground at a T-junction at these coordinates 60.445574, 18.450383 and walk the last 2 km to the meadow where the first barn is located. Then explore any part of the Natural Heritage acquired areas on the headland between Svartsundet in the west, Bålgrundsfjärden in the north and Fågelskärsören in the east. One barn stands on the edge of a larger meadow at these coordinates 60.431444, 18.462389. The second barn (in the pictures) stands by a small meadow where the a pond to benefit the bullfrog has been excavated a little further away. The barn is located at these coordinates 60.432333, 18.465278. Be careful not to disturb the vase makers in the middle of their work. Also think about wildlife. There may be disturbance-sensitive birds nesting in the area. Avoid walking in the direction of birds making warning calls. Go back the way you came and take a detour.
