2. Good for global climate
It's climate smart to protect completely untouched old-growth forest.
- Carbon stored in pristine soil is allowed to remain there instead of being released into the atmosphere. Much of the carbon released to the atmosphere and waterways in traditional forestry is due to ditching, cutting and tillage. Untouched old-growth forest sequesters carbon dioxide from the atmosphere so that more and more carbon is stored in the soil. Old-growth forest is a carbon sink!
- Protection is the most effective way to reduce carbon leakage in areas where old-growth forests with large carbon stocks are otherwise threatened by logging or other forms of exploitation (e.g. municipal construction projects, oil, natural gas and mineral extraction).
