Starting today, December 7th, as the UN COP15 Biodiversity Conference kicks off in Montreal, we present Natural Heritage forests in a new context - as vital parts of a green infrastructure(GI) of high nature value hotspots. Today, we will share a new mapping tool that shows in red the location of high nature value hotspots in forests. In the following days, there will be short presentations of our forests.
We would like to thank Icebug and their customers who during "Green Friday" created a fantastic record-breaking gift of 772,000 SEK from Icebug - it brings lots of love to the old-growth forest and helps color the map of high nature value hotspots redder by Naturarvet permanently protecting more old-growth forest.
Do you also think the color of Christmas should be red and want to spread the love of the precious Life on Earth in old-growth forests? Join us and support Naturarvet to keep and strengthen the red color on the map ❤️
...is an expansion of the protected area at Svartsundet. With two property acquisitions in the summer of 2022, Natural Heritage's property holdings increased from 32 ha to 87 ha. The land extends out to Fågelskärsören in the southeast, giving it the name Fåelskärsudden, and across the headland from Svartsundet to Blågrundsfjärden on the northeastern shore.

It has everything from 200-year-old spruce-dominated coniferous natural forest by swelling streams, silted marshes to mountain birch forest and a small part of bare mountain. Frostviken is largely unprotected nature with high values. The natural heritage protected forest is an important link in a green infrastructure for the area's unique nature.

The forest was acquired by auction and thus saved from the threat of felling and thinning.

Naturarvet expanded the contiguous protection of Skategårdsberget to include a total of 209 ha of nature reserve. The area forms the central link in a larger area of well-functioning Green Infrastructure of contiguous protected forest with high nature values in the southwestern part of Risveden.

Verleskogen was under threat of felling and was protected through a unique collaboration between several stakeholders in 2009. The nature here is a hotspot that lies like an oasis in a landscape that otherwise, due to modern forestry, is mostly coldspots for natural values.

The 70 ha Ännamus forest was the first forest acquired by Naturarvet (formerly "Ett klick för skogen") in 2006. The entire area of the mountain forest is assessed as a key biotope and is a hotspot for high nature values.

The mapping tool aims to identify the core areas that are hotspots for high nature values and shows that Natural Heritage forests are located in areas that are hotspots for high nature values and contribute to maintaining green infrastructure.
